Man and Van Hampton Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Hampton is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and delivery services. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risk, promoting safe working practices and ensuring that our operations are conducted responsibly at all times.

We recognise our legal and moral duties to safeguard people, property and the environment while providing man and van and removal services in homes, offices and other premises. Health and Safety considerations are integral to how we plan, organise and carry out every job.

Policy Aims and Objectives

The main aims of this Health and Safety policy are to:

Promote a culture where safety is the shared responsibility of all employees and contractors. Prevent accidents, injuries, ill health and damage to property arising from our activities. Identify, assess and control risks associated with lifting, carrying, driving, loading, unloading and working in customers premises. Provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure safe working practices. Continuously improve our Health and Safety performance and review procedures regularly.

Management Responsibilities

Company management has overall responsibility for implementing and monitoring this policy. This includes:

Ensuring that Health and Safety is considered in all planning and decision-making related to removal services, vehicle use and staffing. Providing suitable and maintained vehicles, tools, equipment and protective gear for all tasks undertaken. Conducting and documenting risk assessments for typical moving activities and specific jobs that present particular hazards. Establishing safe systems of work for lifting, carrying, loading and transporting goods. Arranging regular review of incidents, near misses and feedback to identify improvements.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and contractors working for Man and Van Hampton must:

Take reasonable care of their own Health and Safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all safety instructions, training, procedures and guidance provided by the company. Use vehicles, equipment and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Refrain from taking shortcuts that compromise safety, even where time pressures exist on removal jobs. Report all accidents, injuries, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions to management without delay. Cooperate fully with any investigation, training or review activity aimed at improving safety.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We carry out risk assessments for our core man and van and removal operations. These assessments identify hazards and set out control measures for common tasks such as:

Manual handling of furniture, boxes and appliances. Use of moving equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps and blankets. Loading and unloading vehicles at residential and commercial properties. Operating in stairwells, narrow corridors and shared access areas. Working at different times of day in varying weather and traffic conditions.

Safe working practices may include team lifting, weight limits for individual items, use of appropriate lifting aids, clear communication between team members and route planning to reduce unnecessary carrying distances.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a key element of our removal services, and particular attention is given to preventing back injuries and strains. Employees are trained in correct lifting techniques, such as keeping loads close to the body, avoiding twisting and using legs rather than the back to lift. Heavy or awkward items are assessed individually and suitable lifting aids, additional manpower or alternative methods are used where necessary. Employees are instructed not to lift items they consider unsafe or beyond their capability.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are maintained in a safe, roadworthy condition and are inspected regularly. Drivers must hold a valid licence for the class of vehicle they operate and comply with all road traffic laws. Safe driving practices are required at all times, including adherence to speed limits, consideration for other road users and securing loads properly before travel. Vehicles must never be overloaded and items must be arranged to prevent movement during transit.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

When working at customer properties and in public areas, our staff must take care to protect both occupants and passers-by. This may involve maintaining clear access routes, keeping doorways and staircases free from trip hazards, and using safe manual handling routes. Floors, walls and fixtures should be protected where appropriate using covers or pads. Any accidental damage or safety concern at a property must be reported promptly to the customer and to management.

Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment

Where required, employees are provided with appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear and high-visibility clothing. All equipment must be used in accordance with training and instructions, kept in good condition and stored safely when not in use. Defective or damaged equipment must not be used and must be reported immediately so that it can be repaired or replaced.

Training, Information and Supervision

Man and Van Hampton ensures that staff receive suitable training relevant to their roles. This may include induction training, manual handling, use of moving equipment, safe driving awareness and specific site instructions. Information about risks and controls is communicated clearly before and during jobs. Supervisors and experienced team members are responsible for monitoring work practices and providing guidance, especially to new or less experienced workers.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Details are recorded and reviewed so lessons can be learned and corrective actions taken. In the event of an emergency, such as serious injury, fire or traffic incident, staff must follow established emergency procedures, prioritise the safety of people present and contact the appropriate emergency services.

Health, Wellbeing and Fitness for Work

Employees are expected to present themselves fit for work and not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to work safely. Any health condition or concern that could affect safe performance of duties should be raised confidentially with management so that reasonable adjustments and additional controls can be considered.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or best practice. Feedback from employees, customers and other stakeholders is welcomed and used to improve our procedures. By working together and maintaining consistent standards, Man and Van Hampton aims to deliver removal and transport services that are not only efficient and reliable but also safe for everyone involved.
